Philadelphia Student Press Association Website

Project Overview

This project involved designing and developing the official website for the Philadelphia Student Press Association (PSPA), a citywide coalition of student-run newspapers across Philadelphia. PSPA’s mission is to amplify student voices, strengthen campus journalism, and connect student reporters to the civic and cultural life of the city. The goal of the website was to serve as more than just an informational landing page — it needed to become a digital hub, a community resource, and a platform that showcases student-led reporting while fostering collaboration among campuses.

Rooted in Philadelphia’s strong journalism tradition and diverse university ecosystem, PSPA positions itself as a bridge between student reporters, local media, and the city’s broader cultural and civic landscape. The website was designed to reflect that vision: professional, accessible, and student-driven.

Project Goals
  • Elevate Student Journalism: Provide a central hub that highlights the work of college newspapers and campus reporters across Philadelphia.

  • Create Accessible Resources: Build a robust Resources section with reporting guides, ethics toolkits, and open-records tutorials to strengthen student newsroom skills.

  • Foster Community & Collaboration: Establish clear pathways for students, schools, and professionals to join, volunteer, sponsor, or mentor through PSPA.

  • Celebrate Student Leadership: Showcase the Executive Committee and Advisory Board as the driving force behind PSPA, emphasizing the organization’s student-led structure.

  • Ensure Long-Term Sustainability: Position the site as a foundation for future events, partnerships, and alumni support that will sustain PSPA’s work.

Key Features I Developed
  • Resources Hub: A curated collection of practical tools — including City Hall coverage guides, public records tutorials, and an ethical journalism toolkit — to equip students with real-world reporting skills.

  • Publications Showcase: A dedicated section highlighting the diverse work of member newspapers, inspiring collaboration and amplifying student voices beyond individual campuses.

  • Get Involved Portal: Clear calls-to-action for students, member schools, volunteers, and sponsors, making it simple to find ways to engage with PSPA.

  • Team & Leadership Pages: Profiles of the Executive Committee and Advisory Board, emphasizing the role of student leadership in shaping PSPA’s vision.

  • Community Connection Tools: Contact and sign-up pages designed to make communication open, accessible, and action-oriented.

Why This Project Matters

The PSPA website launch marked a significant milestone for student journalism in Philadelphia. For the first time, student reporters across the city have a digital home that unites their work, strengthens their skills, and connects them to both peers and professionals. Every page was designed with intention — from empowering students with resources, to showcasing their voices, to opening pathways for civic engagement.

This project was not just about creating a website; it was about creating infrastructure that amplifies and sustains the role of student journalists in Philadelphia’s media ecosystem. By giving student reporters real tools, real visibility, and real community support, the site advances PSPA’s mission and lays the groundwork for its future growth.
